As the holidays approach and the year winds down, I’ve been reflecting on the importance of prioritizing ourselves—especially for those of us navigating high-pressure careers or caregiving roles. Life doesn’t slow down, and neither do the challenges. Recently, I discovered a new way to show up for myself: a water class that became more than just exercise—it became a lifeline for my mind, body, and spirit.
The Journey to Prioritizing Wellness
Let’s face it—between work, personal commitments, and everything in between, carving out time for self-care can feel impossible at times. But this past month, I made a promise to myself: no matter how tight the schedule got, tired or overwhelmed I felt, I would prioritize movement and community.
Enter water play time.
It’s not just a workout; it’s a blend of dance, resistance training, and, most importantly, joy. Attending my first class, I walked in battling a migraine and high blood pressure. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I let the instructor know how I was feeling. She encouraged me to listen to my body and do what I could.
Rediscovering Joy and Connection
As the music played, something clicked. The rhythm reminded me of childhood days filled with dance and performance, sparking a sense of vitality I hadn’t felt in a while. Surrounded by others focused on their own wellness journeys, I felt connected yet wonderfully independent.
The resistance of the water added a layer of challenge while cushioning my movements, making it a perfect fit for my body’s needs.
After class, I treated myself to a session in the dry sauna, letting the warmth further soothe my body and mind as I focused on deep breathing ridding of any residual stresses. This ritual of movement, reflection, and rest felt transformational.
The Deeper Impact of Self-Care
This experience reminded me of a powerful truth: even when we think we’re managing stress well, our bodies may be holding onto more than we realize. Stress addiction—a state where our brains become so accustomed to operating in high-stress mode that it feels normal—can quietly take hold.
Our nervous systems crave balance, and when we intentionally nurture them through movement, mindfulness, and connection, we create space for healing. This water play time didn’t just provide physical relief; it helped me release built-up tension and taught my brain a new, healthier rhythm.
My Magical Place of Self-Care
While I’m grateful for these small, local acts of self-care, I also dream big. My ultimate self-care destination? Bali or Fiji. There’s something magical about the idea of warm beaches, soothing waters, and an environment that fully supports relaxation and healing.
What about you? Where’s your dream self-care destination? Whether it’s a far-off island or a cozy retreat at home, visualize it, and let’s work toward making it a reality.
This journey of prioritizing myself, even during challenging times, has been a reminder of how vital self-care is—not just for me, but for everyone I support personally and professionally.
